Writing Competition 2022

  • Opens February 20, 2022.
  • Deadline May 31st 2022.
  • Open to residents of Brevard County, Florida, USA, only. 
  • Late submissions will not be accepted. 
  • Word counts:
    • Short Stories – 5000 words maximum.
    • Poetry – 300 lines maximum.
  • Manuscripts must be word-processed in Times New Roman 12 font, double spaced, with numbered pages (in the footer) and the title on the cover sheet and at the top of each subsequent page (for multiple page entries) in the header. Single page entries should have the title at the top of the page.
  • Authors’ names must not appear in manuscripts anywhere. 
  • Send manuscripts by email to brevardscribblers@outlook.com
  • You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt of your manuscript/s.
  • In the body of the email message, provide the following information:
    • Your name
    • Your phone number
    • Your mailing address
    • Your email address
    • The titles and formats (i.e. short story and/or poetry) of each entry, with word counts
    • The total entry fee you are submitting to the Treasurer
    • None of the above information should be in your manuscripts
  • Failure to comply with these rules will prompt automatic disqualification.
  • Failure to include entry fees will also prompt automatic disqualification. 
  • Entry fees: Scribblers Members $5.00 per entry and non-members $8.00 per entry.
  • Payment must be made by personal check to: The Scribblers of Brevard, and mailed to: Richard McNamara, Vice-President of The Scribblers of Brevard, 170 Meadow Ave SE, Palm Bay, FL 32909

Cash prizes of $100, $75 and $50 will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed entries in both categories. All other entries that meet a bench line score, will also be published in the anthology. Every entrant that is published in the anthology will receive a free copy. Entrants will receive a copy of the judges’ scores and feedback for each entry, by email. Winners will be notified by email and the results published on the web site and Facebook page of the Scribblers of Brevard. All entries must be previously unpublished. Copyright remains with the authors of all works submitted.

Judging Criteria for the Competition and the Anthology:

Short Stories

Originality in Content and Style (Imagination, Creativity and Individuality)
Plot Structure (A complete story with beginning, middle, and a satisfying conclusion – regardless of the order of these)
Characterization (Vivid, Believable and Compelling Characters)
Character Development and Dialogue
Quality of Writing (Grammar, Sentence Structure, Logical Narrative Flow and Distinct Style or Authorial ‘Voice’)


Originality in Content and Style (Imagination, Creativity and Individuality)
Coherence of Form and Structure (Rhyme Schemes, including Blank and Free Verse, Metre, Rhythm)
Clarity of Language, Description and Imagery
Grammar and Punctuation
Presentation of Ideas, Themes, Meanings and Concepts

Mark Scheme (one mark for each of the five criteria)

5 = Excellent Demonstration of Most or All of the Specified Criteria

4 = Very Good Demonstration with One or Two Omissions

3 = Fair or Average Demonstration

2 = Some Demonstration but with Several Lapses

1 = Minimal or No Demonstration

Maximum Score = 25 for an Individual Entry
