Scribblers of Brevard

Scribblers of Brevard is a long-standing writers’ club based in the Eau Gallie Library, Melbourne, Florida; a place where writers meet to read their work and share encouragement, inspiration and advice with fellow writers. We strive to provide helpful critiques and improve our craft through the sharing of information and experiences.

Our members include novices and published authors alike, who write in all styles, forms and genres (prose and poetry, fiction and non-fiction) and we welcome anyone who has an interest in writing.

We meet every second and fourth Saturday (except for November and December) at the Eau Gallie Public Library on Pineapple Ave. We gather at 9:30 a.m. for coffee, food and socialising, after which our meeting begins at 10:00 a.m. and usually runs until 11:45 a.m.

Please Note: We are currently meeting on the second Saturday of the month in person at the library but on Zoom for the fourth Saturday of the month, for those members and visitors who are still concerned about assembling with other people in confined spaces. We take every care to ensure that the library meeting room is as Covid-proof as we can make it so chairs are spaced widely apart and anyone who wants to wear a mask is free to do so.

Meetings are devoted primarily to the reading aloud of writers’ work (excerpts, complete work, present or past) which is critiqued by members in positive, appropriate, relevant and informed ways. The aim of the critiques is to affirm the best aspects of the work and offer helpful advice and suggestions for improvement. Members can sign up to read at the next meeting but this is not obligatory.

The closing section of our meetings is devoted to other business, which includes the usual minutes and treasurer’s report etc. but we also discuss recommended books and films, and share information about local writing events and local, national and international competitions.

We publish an annual anthology of the best of our work, now entitled Written in the Sun (previously Driftwood) which is available from the Amazon book store in print and e-book format for the Kindle device.

If you would like to join us in 2023 please feel free to drop in to any meeting. You will be made most welcome. You can try us out a couple of times before deciding if you want to join us as a member. The Membership Fee is annual and very modest. It includes attendance to the annual Luncheon. When you join, we will add you to our mailing list so that you can be kept informed of upcoming meetings.
